These eastern mountains with their eastern slopes passing into steppe are open to the desert as the west are open to the sea. It is possible to "coast" along this region by semi-desert ways. Moreover the desert interpenetrates the land with inlets in a way the sea does not. A special instance of this interpenetration is the long gulf which reaches up from the South flowing along the Wady Arabah and around the Dead Sea so that the wilderness stands at the foot of Jerusalem in the heart of Palestine.
